These are the exact exercises one of our editors trained on, from beginner to running our cinematic lane. Practice them before your test and your edits will show it.
Go through the footage and screenshot the five most cinematic stills you can find. Judge composition: is the frame balanced, is the subject placed on a third, is anything blocking the space, do leading lines guide the eye. Then hold your five up against the ones you rejected and ask why.
From your stills, pick pairs of scenes whose color palettes flow into each other. Two different locations can feel like one story when the colors carry across the cut. This is the skill that makes a montage feel like one continuous piece.
Before you cut anything, play the track and drop a marker on every beat that matters. Then cut to your markers. Your cuts land on the music because you planned them to. That is how editing on beat is actually done.
